Hollywoodland: The Superman Suicide

I’ve always been a fan of Superman, as a kid I was obsessed with him. So this movie looks fascinating. In Hollywoodland Ben Affleck stars as George Reeves, the real-life actor who played Superman on TV in the fifties. At the height of his fame Reeves shocked the world by committing suicide. Newspaper headlines everywhere declared “Superman Dead”. But others would soon claim it was murder. To this day the case remains unsolved.

I’m debating whether to see the movie when it comes out. On the one hand, I have a soft spot for anything Superman-related, and a good bio flick can be fascinating. On the other hand the movie is rated R for sexual content, plus I’m afraid the dark side of Reeves’ personal life would cast a shadow over my childhood love of Superman.

The movie also stars Adrien Brody, Bob Hoskins, and Diane Lane. You can view the trailer here.

  1. Thanks for the link Cedric.Just for the art direction and the photographie the film seem to be worth watching.Really some gorgeous color in that trailer.

  2. ive seen hollywoodland, its a bit jumbled up at the beginng the sudden jumps kinda threw me but its absolutely worth watching! My love for superman is not in any way any less! The movie raises alot of interesting questions about reeves death, it shows the impact of supermans death to the kids who loved him, it does have one negative shot of reeves drinking while wearing the superman costume but thats part of reeves darkside. I gotta say its worth xatching its exiting and interestin.
